In the ever-evolving landscape of the digital age, where every click, like, and share carries the potential to shape our lives, it's no wonder that the topic of mental health has come to the forefront. As our online and offline worlds become increasingly intertwined, we find ourselves grappling with the impact of technology on our well-being. This is a short attempt to explain the complexities of mental health in the digital age, exploring both the perils and the promises it holds.

The Digital Dilemma

The rise of smartphones and social media platforms has brought us closer together, yet paradoxically, it has also contributed to feelings of isolation and anxiety. According to a study by the Royal Society for Public Health, heavy use of social media is associated with increased rates of depression, anxiety, and poor sleep quality. The constant comparison to curated online personas can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

 Renowned psychologist Jean Twenge, in her book "iGen," has explored how the smartphone generation's mental health is distinctly shaped by their digital experiences. She notes the correlation between the steep rise in smartphone usage and the increase in feelings of loneliness and depression among adolescents.


The Power of Connection

But it's not all doom and gloom. Technology also provides valuable tools for maintaining and improving mental health. Mental health apps, teletherapy platforms, and online support communities have democratized access to mental health resources. These digital tools offer convenience, affordability, and anonymity, making it easier for individuals to seek help and connect with others who share their experiences. 

Writer Johann Hari, in his book "Lost Connections," investigates the root causes of depression and anxiety and argues that meaningful social connections are crucial for our mental well-being. In the digital age, forging connections can be facilitated by online communities and support networks. These spaces provide solace and understanding to individuals facing similar challenges.



Striking a Balance

 So, how can we strike a balance between the digital world and our mental health? Here are some strategies:

 a.    Mindful Consumption: Be conscious of your screen time and the content you consume. Unfollow accounts that make you feel inadequate or anxious, and set boundaries on when and where you use your devices.

b.    Digital Detox: Consider periodic digital detoxes where you disconnect from screens to reconnect with the physical world and yourself. Take this time to engage in offline hobbies and activities.

 c.    Mental Health Apps: Explore mental health apps that offer meditation, mindfulness, or mood tracking features. These tools can help you better understand and manage your emotional well-being.

 d.    Seek Professional Help: If you're struggling with your mental health, don't hesitate to seek the guidance of a mental health professional. There is no shame in walking into the clinic and seek the attention of a medical doctor with mental health training or a Psychologist. Many therapists now even offer online counseling services. Talk to someone with the training to help.

e.    Community Support: Join groups, communities or forums focused on mental health. Sharing your experiences and hearing from others can provide valuable support and understanding.  

 f.      Seek and build human relationship: Though social media platforms have granted us the ability to connect with friends, family, and acquaintances more easily than ever before. But as we accumulate online friends and followers, we often find ourselves questioning the depth of these connections. The constant barrage of status updates, likes, and emojis can leave us feeling oddly disconnected from the people we're supposedly "connected" to. And because digital interactions often lack the depth and authenticity of face-to-face conversations, seek and build sincere human relationships, instead of spending too much time online.


The digital age is a double-edged sword when it comes to mental health. It can both exacerbate and alleviate mental health issues. To navigate this era successfully, we must be conscious of our digital consumption, harness the power of technology for our benefit, and prioritize our mental well-being. As we continue to shape our relationship with technology, let's remember that our mental health is the most precious asset we have, deserving of our care and attention in this brave new yet tumultuous digital world.

THE DANGERS OF THE LACK OF CONSEQUENCES IN SOCIETY


 The lack of consequences for wrong actions in societies can have significant negative impacts on the development and stability of a nation. This can be seen in many countries around the world, but it is particularly acute in Africa. A simple review of the situation at hand will unearth the appalling situation we find ourselves; to be honest we are in a deeper problem than we would love to admit.


One of the main dangers of a lack of consequences for wrong actions in societies is that it can lead to a culture of impunity. This is when individuals, groups, or even governments believe that they can act with complete disregard for the law and not face any repercussions. This can lead to a breakdown of the rule of law and a lack of respect for authority. This can have serious consequences, including the erosion of democratic institutions, the rise of corruption, and the destabilization of societies as we see in Nigeria and all over Africa today.

 

This issue has been widely reported in the African continent, many authors have highlighted the dangers of impunity and the need for accountability. For example, in their article "Impunity in Africa: A Threat to Democracy and development," E. Gyimah-Boadi and R. K. A. Gyimah-Boadi argue that impunity breeds corruption, undermines the rule of law and democracy, and prevents the delivery of essential services to citizens." Similarly, in "Africa's Struggle Against Impunity," J. D. Oluleye notes that "impunity is a major obstacle to the rule of law and good governance, and it undermines the integrity of democratic institutions and the protection of human rights."


In a study, "The politics of corruption in Africa" by Chuka Onwumechili, found that the lack of consequences for corrupt behavior in African societies is a major contributor to the persistence of corruption in the region. The author argues that corruption undermines the rule of law, public trust in government, and economic growth.

 

Another study, "The impact of corruption on economic growth in Africa" by Eberechukwu E. Nwokah, opined that corruption has a negative impact on economic growth in African countries. The author argues that corruption leads to a misallocation of resources and creates a business environment that is unfavorable for investment.

 

In finding solution to this horrendous problem confronting us as a people, either as a nation or continent, one approach is to strengthen institutions that can hold individuals and organizations accountable for their actions. This includes strengthening the judicial system, creating independent anti-corruption agencies, and increasing transparency in government. This could involve increasing funding for courts, prosecutors, and other legal institutions, as well as providing training and resources to help them better investigate and prosecute crimes. Additionally, it may be necessary to reform laws and regulations to ensure that they are more effective in addressing corruption and other forms of misconduct.

 

Another approach would be to encourage civil society organizations to play a more active role in promoting accountability. This could include supporting local NGOs that are working to combat corruption and other forms of misconduct, as well as engaging citizens in the fight against impunity through public awareness campaigns and other forms of civic engagement. This approach is to increase citizen participation in the political process. This can be done through the use of new technologies, such as social media, to engage citizens in the democratic process and hold elected officials accountable for their actions.

 

Lastly, raising awareness about the negative impacts of corruption and the importance of accountability can also be a powerful tool to curb public excesses. This can be done through education and public campaigns to educate citizens about their rights and how to hold public officials accountable.

 

In conclusion, societies and civil institutions more than politicians must be willing to inconvenience themselves in finding lasting solutions to these issues. The fact is that political players in Africa and Nigeria in particular are not interested in making any changes because the current situation suits them better, that is why concerned members of the public must be willing to go out of their comfort zones to do the absolutely needful.

 

It is my belief that; a society without conscience is not a society worthy of habitation. A society without conscience is not a society worthy of habitation. Conscience is the moral compass that guides individuals and groups in making ethical decisions and behaving in a responsible manner. Without conscience, individuals and groups would be free to engage in harmful and destructive behavior without any regard for the well-being of others. This would lead to a breakdown of social norms and an increase in crime, violence, and other forms of social disorder.

 

A society without conscience would be a dangerous and violent place, where the rights and well-being of individuals would be constantly at risk. It would be a place where people would not be safe to live and would not be able to form healthy relationships with one another. Therefore, it is essential for a society to have a strong moral compass, and for individuals and groups to be guided by a sense of conscience, in order to create a safe and healthy environment for all.

Making the best of your relationship life in 2023 begins with setting clear and realistic goals for yourself. This means understanding what you want from a relationship, as well as what you are willing to put into it.

This means actively listening to one another, expressing your own thoughts and feelings clearly, and being open to feedback.

HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN 2023

Congratulations you made it into 2023. I suspect that you have or you are taking stock of your achievements or otherwise in the year 2022, and you are probably asking the same questions I have been asking for the last couple of weeks; what can I do to guarantee a successful 2023?

What do I need to do differently?

What areas of my life do I need to improve upon?

How do I begin the process of improving my life for the better?

How do I make the most of the chances life offers in 2023? Etc.

Making the most of a situation is the expectation of everyone I suppose and for the fact that the year 2023 holds a lot of meaning for many of us especially Nigerians for obvious reasons. Irrespective of where you come from or where you are, the desire to be successful is common to us all.

The problem oftentimes is that our desires rest on virtually nothing but imaginations. I mean desires and passion are good but you have got to have concrete plans and light posts that guide you actions because ultimately they help you stay the course.

While this is not an exhaustive list, here are a few suggestions for making the most of the year 2023:

1.  1. Set clear goals for yourself: Consider what you want to accomplish in the year and make a plan for achieving those goals. This could include personal goals, such as improving your health or learning a new skill, or professional goals, such as advancing your career or starting a business. It is important to be specific about what you want to achieve. This will help you create a roadmap for success and stay focused on your priorities.

2.  2. Take care of yourself: Prioritize self-care: Success doesn't just come from working hard – it also requires taking care of yourself. Make sure to prioritize self-care and prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This could involve things like getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and finding ways to manage stress.

3. 3.  Stay organized: It's easy to get overwhelmed when you have a lot on your plate, so it's important to stay organized and on top of your responsibilities. Consider using tools like calendars, to-do lists, and project management software to help you stay organized and manage your time effectively.

4. 4.  Build relationships: Make an effort to connect with others and build strong relationships with friends, family, and colleagues. This could involve making time for social activities, volunteering, or simply spending time with loved ones.

While it is plausible to learn a skill, it is highly commendable to improve, update on the skills you have learnt. Do not stop at basic course levels, look for the next improved and advanced courses. You may wish to take them at quarterly intervals. No matter how you do it, keeping building yourself.

7.  7Practice gratitude: Make an effort to focus on the positive things in your life and express gratitude for the people and experiences that bring you joy. This can help you cultivate a positive mindset and make the most of each day.

LET GO!

There is an increasing demand for the creativity of all living beings, both humans and animals. To fulfill this need, it seems that we must find a way to connect with our inner selves in order to tap into what lies within us. Without this connection, many people feel as though they are operating on automatic pilot- producing work without any real sense of attachment or inspiration. One possible solution may be found in the concept of "letting go." By allowing ourselves to relinquish control over specific aspects of our lives- we can free ourselves up to concentrate on other aspects that inspire us more deeply.

 


Spiritual hunger is seen in people from all walks of life. It can often be mistaken for zeal or a religious fervor. But, in reality, spiritual hunger is a longing for something more. It is a yearning for meaning and purpose in life. It can be found in people of all faiths and all walks of life. It is a hunger that can only be satisfied by uncovering the spiritual dimension of life.

In order to feed the spiritual hunger, we need to recognize it. We need to recognize the signs that indicate that we are hungry for something more. Some of the signs that indicate that someone is spiritual hungry are deep feelings of emptiness or loneliness. These feelings may be accompanied by thoughts of insignificance or a feeling of being lost. People who are spiritual hungry also often have a yearning for deeper connection to life. They may seek out spiritual guidance or search for meaning in their life beyond the physical realm.


The steps we need to take in order to give up the infernal groove are repentance and confession. Repentance is the acknowledgment that we have sinned and need to make amends. Confession is the act of communicating our sins and faults to another person. It allows us to gain forgiveness and understanding. Through repentance and confession, we can open ourselves up to the possibility of redemption. We can be forgiven and start fresh.

The spiritual hunger that we all experience is a powerful plea for something more in life. Recognizing the signs can help us to feed that hunger and find redemption.
